Hi Kent – Challenging Deafness!
Do you have hearing loss or live with a person or child who has hearing
loss?
Hi Kent is an independent charity and works in
partnership with the KCC and Medway Council Social Services, providing
a wide range of useful services. It is accessible to all age groups and
to people with any degree of hearing loss.
Most of the services are free of cost to the
client.
The aims of Hi Kent are to:
- Enable hearing impaired people to overcome
the socially isolating aspects of being or becoming deaf by the provision
of information and environmental equipment.
- To enable elderly, frail people to maximise
the benefits of hearing aids by offering maintenance and after-care
of aids through Day Centre clinics and visits to the housebound.
- To raise awareness of the needs of hearing
impaired people through training courses.
There are Resource Centres at Canterbury, Gillingham and Maidstone,
providing access to the full range of Hi Kent services. They are open
every weekday and an appointment is not usually necessary.
At the centres there are working displays of
technical aids to help with communication in everyday living – loop
systems for use with TV or Radio, Flashing Light and Vibrating Pagers
for Doorbells, Amplified and Text Telephones, Alarm Clocks, Baby Alarms
etc. For those of you who attend meetings or lectures, there are personal
listening devices to assist with social conversation and business meetings.
The centres are manned by friendly and helpful
people who fully appreciate the problems of living with hearing loss.
