Hi Kent

St Johns Ambulance

Big Hiccup
Hiccups are common and usually last only for a few minutes, short attacks are just a nuisance but if prolonged it may become worrying, tiring and painful. These short, repeated, noisy intakes of air are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm working against a partially closed windpipe.

Treatment for this is to try and increase temporarily carbon dioxide levels in the blood by trying these methods. Sit quietly and hold your breath for as long as possibly, take long drinks from the opposite site of a cup or glass (never tried this as it sounds very difficult!) or place a paper bag (NOT PLASTIC) over the nose and mouth and re-breath the expired air for a minute to lower the level of oxygen in the blood. If hiccups persist for more than a few hours seek medical advice.
