Lenham Town Crier

Having been born and bred in Lenham and living in the Village for the first 18 years of my life it wasn’t until I returned to the Village in 1991 at the age of 30 that I became a little more involved in Village life.

It was in the Dog and Bear (pint in hand) that I heard there was a ‘Town Crier’s’ Competition and as I was told that I had the biggest mouth in the Village this was a challenge I just couldn’t resist! Subsequently I won the Competition against some stiff opposition and was declared Lenham’s Town Crier for the following year. With very few call outs in 1992; I competed at the May Day Craft Fair and won again, so continuing as Town Crier. In 1993 again at the May Day Craft Fair, nobody wanted to compete against me!
I have continued to serve as Town Crier in the Village for nearly eleven years, enjoying every moment. I have had the pleasure of meeting several celebrities at the Christmas Light Ceremonies, although unfortunately at last year’s ceremony I was suffering from a throat infection and couldn’t ‘shout’! As I am the official Town Crier I am having a new Town Crier’s outfit made. This should be ready in early May. I am looking forward to giving it an airing.
