Family History Group
The Group was founded about four years ago, after several people asked me how and where to search for their ancestors. It is a self-help group, which meets on the fourth Monday of each month, (except July, August and December) in Harrietsham School. Members attending vary between 12 and 20, but there is plenty of room for more. Cost £1 when you come along – there is no joining fee. Several members of the group are seasoned researchers and are more than willing to help others. There are no set periods of instruction, but on occasions some members tell of their experiences in researches, what they wanted to find out, and how they have achieved their aim. Furthermore, what they have done with the findings. There are many books on the subject available at the meetings, and these may be borrowed by members. If you wish to find out about your ancestors, come along and find out how to start. It is not an impossible task. Challenging, yes, but certainly attainable. Twice a year, instead of the normal class, we visit the Family Record Centre in London, where you can search the indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1837. Also nearby you can search the records of most London churches. A coash goes from the car park at Harrietsham Community Centre to the Records Office – a door-to-door service. Since the group was formed many members have traced living relatives, as well as those from the past, adding much to their family tree. For further information, please contact Frank
