Kent Association of Parish Councils
Investing in local facilities

It was noted that one-in-ten of the population of Kent live in villages, 42 per cent of rural parishes have no shops and 50 per cent have no schools for the under six-year olds, so there is a real need to raise the quality of local governments, although there are many forms of funding. Other grants are available for child-care facilities, health-care, leisure and information/Internet points. There are also Parish Transport Grants and grants for projects that promote walking and cycling.

The Meeting heard that 70 per cent of Kent's water came from ground water off the chalk downs but by 2025 all the water companies in Kent would be in deficit with too much extraction from our main rivers. Recycling water has to be evaluated and taken on board for the future. There should have been a talk on Community Wardens by Supt C Eyre but this was unfortunately cancelled.

Coastal flooding, highways and surface water flooding and flooding from sewers was discussed at length but the Environmental Agency is now better able to cope with emergencies with up-to-date maps showing the flood areas of Kent.

Click here for the Environment Agency water resources page. And flood / environment map for Lenham and a larger scale map for Kent which shows we are not too badly off.

Perfecting the Parish Charter
The Annual Conference with the Borough Council, held on 2 October at County Hall, included on the agenda the Community plan and Quality Councils. A meeting with Mr Snaith to re-write the Parish Charter is to be arranged. There is a Model Charter from Central Government as a minimum standard.

Highway speed indicators signs may be the next joint venture
on traffic calming by the Police and Parish Councils wishing to participate.
