COMPOSTING
Did you know that the UK only composts 12% of
its ‘compostable’ waste. We have the worst record in Europe.
It is a key objective of the Government to increase
the amount of organic waste to be composted. Targets have been set to
recycle or compost at least 25% of household waste by 2005, rising to
at least 33% by 2015.
So what can we do about it?
Reduce, re-use or recycle
In the case of compost, recycle all our organic matter – ie fruit
and vegetable peelings, teabags, coffee grouts, hamster etc droppings
and bedding, flowers and garden waste, such as grass clippings etc. All
these items will break down to form compost within a few months, forming
a useable substance that is no longer waste, with the addition of some
water and the occasional turning of the material.
Why should we do it?
Compost can be used as a soil conditioner, to improve soil structure and
to enhance its biological activity, and a growing medium for the horticultural
industry. The use of compost reduced harmful emission of the greenhouse
gas methane from landfills (the alternative to composting!), it reduces
the need for scarce natural resources such as peat and it returns organic
matter to the soil. It also saves us money and gives people something
to do who would normally dump waste on other peoples’ land!
How much will it cost us?
KCC are currently subsidising a scheme through Blackwall – 0870
844 3001 – from whom you can purchase, for the sum of £10,
either a 220 litre or 330 litre bin, complete with 10 litre kitchen bin
to collect your kitchen waste (RRP normally £39.95 and £49.94
respectively). At this price you could buy two and have a year round supply
of compost! Alternatively you could build a wooden crate in which to place
your compost and cover it with a piece of old carpet. If you already compost,
encourage your neighbour to do their bit to help the environment –
better than a lot of gas!!
